Can a real RPG work on a phone?

Can a real RPG work on a phone?

Mobile RPGs get a bad rap, often deserved. Too many are menus wearing a story like a costume. But every so often one gets it right.

Ember Crown Saga is turn-based, which is the smart move for a phone. Nothing is time-sensitive, so you can pause after every action. That fits the way we actually play — in scattered pockets of free time.

The party building is where it shines. Swapping members changes fights meaningfully, and the elemental system rewards planning. We beat a boss on our fourth try purely by rethinking our lineup, and that felt earned.

The lesson for developers is simple: respect the player's time and let them stop. Ember Crown Saga does both, and it's better for it.
